Here are some other drumming tips to get you started with.
Drum Teacher's Beginner Lesson Tip #1: Holding the drumstick. The first step when learning the drums is to learn how to hold the drum sticks, it's not just a case of holding them in the most comfortable position as the most comfortable position may not be the most versatile. Make sure the stick is in the palm of your hand with your thumb pointing upwards towards the tip of the drumstick. There should also be about an inch at the bottom of the stick that comes out beneath your hands. When you grip the stick you don't need to hold on as tight as you can, just tight enough so they wont fall out of your hands. They still need to have some slackness to them so you will have faster movement.
Drum Teacher's Beginner Lesson Tip #2: For brand new drummers you must decide on your basic stick technique first. This may sound elementary but trust me on this because you don't want to develop bad habits. So start here. Decide on standard classical grip or matched grip. In high school we were forced to play standard but I later changed to matched because I felt I had more control. Pick one and stick with it. Work on your grip and learn to relax your writs and let the stick float in your hand.
Drum Teacher's Beginner Lesson Tip #3: You need to understand basic music theory. Get a book or two read them through. At first things can seem a little over basic and later they might get a little too much and appear contradictory but in the long term they will be a great source that you can check on and not have you searching about the internet for answers only to find ten different answers to your question.
Drum Teacher's Beginner Lesson Tip #4: Learn at least five basic rudiments, and learn them well. The paradiddle, single stroke and double stroke roll are my favorites. They are like the bread and butter of most drum patterns. You will use these over and over again throughout your playing. In fact, you can do most anything in drumming using only a few basic rudiments. It's important to know them well and be able to play them with ease, including all of their variations. Take this seriously because your rudiments are your basic building blocks and every great drummer can perform them with ease.
